First Contact Physiotherapists

First Contact Physiotherapists (FCPs) are specially trained physiotherapists who provide initial assessment, diagnosis, and management of musculoskeletal (joint, muscle, and bone) conditions. They offer patients a direct route to expert care without needing to see a GP first. This service aims to reduce waiting times and improve access to appropriate treatment.

Patients can expect FCPs to conduct thorough assessments, provide advice, recommend exercises, and initiate treatment plans. If necessary, FCPs can order diagnostic tests, refer patients for further specialist care, or suggest alternative treatment options. This approach supports timely and effective management of conditions such as back pain, arthritis, sports injuries, and other musculoskeletal problems.

Using an FCP service can often lead to quicker relief of symptoms and an improved understanding of managing your condition, helping you return to daily activities sooner. The service is free at the point of use and available through your local primary care network.

If you are not wanting to see a First Contact Physiotherapist, and wish to see a different Physiotherapist, you must see your GP.
